Classic French Onion Soup Recipe

In cold weather, French onion soup is my comfort food. Despite the onions, which the kids dislike, it's a family favorite. The tender baguette chunks soaking in the broth under the melted cheese are tempting. I make this soup every day of the week and it's excellent for guests!

If you crave French onion soup but don't want to eat out, try this recipe. Its real flavors and fresh ingredients will make you wonder why you didn't cook it sooner. Skip the canned stuff and try making it yourself!

Falafel Ingredients

Onions—the soup's highlight. Use whatever you have, but yellow onions are customary for this soup. For a vegetarian alternative, use veggie stock instead of beef stock.

Butter for onion caramelization Flour (or gluten-free flour) thickens soup. Deglaze the pan with dry white wine for that characteristic flavor. Worcestershire sauce, fresh thyme, garlic, and bay leaves give French onion soup its great taste.

Toast French bread and place it on top before the cheese. The pièce de résistance of French onion soup is Swiss cheese.

Classic French onion soup is simple to make. It tastes complicated as expected. A simple French onion soup recipe takes 10 minutes to prep and simmers perfectly. You'll toast and broil in the end, but it's so easy you'll be a pro in no time!

Caramelize onions in butter, add garlic and flour, deglaze with white wine, add stock and seasonings, and simmer. Once ready, toast French bread slices and garnish each bowl of soup. Place the cheese on top and broil for a few minutes to achieve that trademark bubbling.
